☑️TODAY’S TASK: Try to add at LEAST 1 item under each category. Then you will have the basic items needed to provide light, find your way, stay informed, and communicate.

LIGHT:

TOOLS:

COMMUNICATION:

  • SMALL MIRROR for signaling SOS. Signaling SOS consists of 3 short / 3 long / 3 short flashes of light.

  • WHISTLE - Signing SOS with a whistle is similar to signaling with light. 3 short blasts / 3 long blasts / 3 short blasts

  • NOAA RADIO - Preferably one that can be charged multiple ways including USB, battery, hand-crank, and solar.

  • 2-WAY RADIO - In an emergency, phone lines will be busy. Trying to get in touch with your family by phone will be hard. Having alternative ways to communicate is very important. A 2-way radio is an option that will help you stay in touch. Just keep in mind there are limitations on the range the 2-way radios will work.

  • HAM RADIO - HAM radios have a much farther range than 2-way radios. You can even talk to people on the other side of the world. The only thing with HAM radios is you need to get a HAM radio license. However, there are many online courses as well as in-person courses that can help you prepare.

  • NOTEPAD, PEN, & SHARPIE - Being able to keep track of information during survival situations is VERY important. There are notepads that are weather resistant so you don’t have to worry about losing important information if that notepad gets wet. A pen is important to have and if possible, a tactical pen. Not only can you use it for writing, but for self defense as well. We also like having a SHARPIE marker not only in our “Bug Out Bags”, but also in our EDC (every day carry bag). A SHARPIE marker can write on almost every surface making it a great tool for communication.

  • SMALLPOWER BANK for keeping phones and emergency radios charged.

MISCELLANEOUS:

  • CASH - You will want to make sure you include small bills because during emergency situations businesses usually aren’t able to give change and ATMs are down if there’s a power outage.

  • GORILLA TAPE - From patching a hole in your tent or clothes, to building a shelter and fixing broken gear (and much more), gorilla tape is a must have item for your "Bug Out Bag".

  • IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS - You’ll want to make sure you include important documents like birth certificates, social security cards, and immunization records. Store these in a waterproof & fireproof envelope.

  • USB to save important documents on. Make sure you get one where you can set a pin to access the information.
